    Catch-all email addresses, explained

    A catch-all domain accepts mail for every address, so verification cannot confirm a single mailbox. Here is what that means for your list and how to send safely.

    A catch-all (or "accept-all") domain is configured to accept mail sent to any address at that domain, whether or not the mailbox exists. Mail to a typo like *jhon@company.com* is accepted at the door and then either routed to a fallback inbox or silently discarded.

    Why catch-all breaks mailbox-level verification

    Verification works by opening an SMTP conversation with the receiving server and asking whether it will accept mail for a specific recipient. On a normal domain the server answers 250 (exists) or 550 (does not exist). A catch-all server answers 250 for everything, so a positive answer carries no information about that particular mailbox.

    This is why a good verifier returns a separate catch-all / accept-all status rather than pretending the address is valid. Labelling it "valid" would inflate your deliverability expectations; labelling it "invalid" would delete real customers.

    How common are catch-all domains?

    Catch-all is most common on small business domains, agencies, and companies using hosted Exchange with a fallback rule. Consumer providers such as Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo are not catch-all, which is why free-provider addresses verify cleanly.

    How to send to catch-all addresses safely

    • Separate them into their own segment instead of mixing them with confirmed-valid addresses.
    • Warm up: send to a small sample first and measure bounces before mailing the rest.
    • Prioritise addresses that follow a confirmed corporate pattern (first.last@) over guesses.
    • Use engagement data. A catch-all address that opened or clicked in the last 90 days behaves like a valid one.
    • Suppress anything that hard bounces on the first send, permanently.
    Rule of thumb: keep catch-all volume under about 20% of any single send, and never include catch-all addresses in a reputation-sensitive send such as a re-engagement campaign from a new domain.

    Catch-all vs risky vs unknown

    "Risky" is a broader bucket that can include catch-all, role-based email addresses, and full mailboxes. "Unknown" usually means the receiving server timed out or applied greylisting and the check could not complete. Retry unknowns before deciding.
